A Note From The Editor
In these dark and gloomy days in Iceland we have had some good things going on
for us. Unnur Birna the new Miss World coming from our little country and what
is perhaps more interesting for us 4 wheelers a brand new world record in
overland travel to the South Pole.
Christmas is coming and along with it lots of colorful lights to fight the
darkness. As I write these words it is a little over 4 in the afternoon and the
sky is totally dark. In heathen times before Christianity we had a feast called
"Jól" to celebrate the coming of new light.
I met with Ragnar Robertsson an old classmate of mine who is now in the Formula
Off Road competitions. He showed me a DVD disk with all the 2002 Formula Off
Road championships. This is professionally shot video with sound tracks in
English as well as Icelandic. If you are interested in watching some amazing
stunts I set up a page where you can see a short footage from the completion and
submit an order if you like to see the full disk.
See here for more details.
Holyday greetings from Iceland!

Readers Rigs Are On!
If you have a 4x4 you feel proud of and want to
show others - please don't hesitate to submit pictures and descriptions.
Already there are a number of nice trucks up.
My plan is to make these pages high-quality and accessible and I need your help
in doing so. Almost all 4x4's are unique and I am sure yours is in some way.
Share your experience and allow the rest of the 4 wheeling world to see your truck and
how it is used...
Take some time in describing your 4x4 and how you enjoy it. Use as many words as
needed. As more rigs are added I get more picky - choosing only
interesting rigs with lots of information.
Here is the page for
submitting your 4x4 and looking at other readers trucks.

GPS Basics
Traveling in a strange and unknown land is always difficult. People have used
compasses and maps to learn their way and before that Vikings used stars and the
height of the sun to sail for long journeys on the big unknown ocean.
Modern days of computers and satellites has brought us ever more accuracy in
finding our present location on our planet earth. Global Positioning System -
GPS is only a little over a decade old now. It is now used for the most accurate
positioning available with receivers that are easy to keep in the off road
vehicle and even carrying along for hiking tours. There are even some wrist
watches with GPS built in!
GPS is based on 24 satellites circling around the earth in 20,200 km height
(12,552 miles) and transmitting radio signals down to us. Satellites transmit
signals with information about their exact position as well as the time based on
accurate atomic clocks.
At any time there should be at least 4 satellites over you in the sky. The GPS
receiver takes the time signal from one of them and synchronizes its clock.
Measuring how long the signal reaches the receiver from the other "visible"
satellites enables the receiver to calculate the location on our three
dimensional earth.
Using the GPS receiver is pretty simple especially compared with all the
complicated calculations and measurements involved. You could use a written list
of locations or a route to find your way. However a map along with a GPS system
is the most efficient way to use it. A normal printed map is quite usable. Some
newer receivers have a built in map and even a memory card for your specific
region. A digitized map in a computer gives you the most flexibility because you
can store routes and tracks and follow your progress in real time on the screen.
Newest receivers use street maps to lead you to an address you have never before
gone to. Giving vocal directions like "take second right at next roundabout".
Off road users find maps with tracks and rivers along with height lines and hut
locations of more use.
From the time the US Department of Defense stopped corrupting the signals for
civilian use accuracy in GPS systems has improved a lot. Around 5-10 meters
(12-24 feet) horizontally and 20-30 meters (50-70 feet) vertically. WAAS
technology used in the states improves these numbers significantly.
For major trips I recommend you also take an old fashioned hand held compass
along as backup if the GPS receiver fails - that can be a lifesaver.

Tip - Use What You Got
Like anything made by humans - 4x4 are a compromise. There is no such thing as
the perfect off road vehicle. Make it fit all your family and still be able to
take it wherever you want to go can be challenging. A great rock crawler would
be slow and uncomfortable for long journeys. A luxurious SUV with lots of space
gives a great riding experience for long rides but might run into problems doing
some serious river crossing or mudding.
Use what you got - try it out in various terrain. Enjoy the ride! Observe what
can be improved and where you want to go. Minor things can be modified to make
them function better and for major issues you may consider buying a new
rig rather than performing some expensive modifications.
Submit Your 4x4 Article! Off-roaders like you usually have their
own strong opinion on how, why and where to wheel. Share the joy with other
readers!
You can write on any topic related to 4x4 off road you feel you have a message

problems, car care tips, etc. Anything that will help your fellow 4 wheeler get
their truck ready and able to perform off roads!
By all means if you know a good joke that would fit in the newsletter PLEASE let
