  • A Note From The Editor
The final round of the Icelandic Formula Off Road championship is at Blonduos this next weekend. The suspension is building up in all classes. In the Modified Street Class, Ragnar Robertsson has a comfortable 8 point lead on Bjarki Reynisson. If there will be as few contenders as last events, Ragnar only has to attend to get enough points to win. Ragnar is also leading in the Overall by one point and will try his best to keep his position there - leading guys with better equipped Unlimited Class 4x4s. Three contestants are competing for the Icelandic championship title in the Unlimited Class. Sigurdur Thor Jonsson on the Troll with 23 points, Gunnar Gunnarsson the Clown with 21 points and Daniel G. Ingimundarson on the Green Thunder with 20 points.

The event starts at 13:00. To get there you drive to the small town of Blonduos in the north of Iceland. At the roundabout you take the east exit and drive for a few minutes to the rock mine. You should see lots of people and cars nearby. There will also be signs to lead the way: "Torfæra"...

  • Readers Rigs Are On!
If you have a 4x4 you feel proud of and want to show others - please don't hesitate to submit pictures and descriptions.

Already there are a number of nice trucks up. My plan is to make these pages high-quality and accessible and I need your help in doing so. Almost all 4x4's are unique and I am sure yours is in some way. Share your experience and allow the rest of the 4 wheeling world to see your truck and how it is used...

Take some time in describing your 4x4 and how you enjoy it. Use as many words as needed. As more rigs are added I get more picky - choosing only interesting rigs with lots of information.

Here is the page for submitting your 4x4 and looking at other readers trucks.

    Selecting Your 4x4

Your selection should of course be based on your real needs but also and no less on your dreams. How many passengers will be with you? Where will you travel? Will your family fit into it?

Unfortunately talking with many 4 wheelers is not helpful. They tend to fall in love with a certain brand and tell you everything else is crap. Remember to take all advice with a grain of salt – try to read between the lines. All brands have their weak spots and all have some good things.

Here are a few features to look for in your selection process:

o Engine - The best engine for a 4x4 has lots of torque and is strong and durable. Simple design would also mean that it is easy to fix and is therefore and advantage.

o 4x4 - Not every trip requires a real 4x4. If you can do with a 4x4 car consider that an option. Else you should select a 4x4 with high and low gears. That makes future modifications easier.

o Driveline - Newer 4x4s are unfortunately often equipped with weak drivelines. They may work ok for easy trips but will break under heavy use. Changing these parts can be done, but is least expensive to get in the final 4x4. Take a moment to inspect the underside of the vehicle – a weak driveline should be quite obvious.

o Modifiability – If you have ANY dreams of future modifications remember that simple to modify is more economical in the long run. In extreme modification projects this will however matter less.

o Built on a chassis – All trucks and many SUVs are built on a chassis. Unibody designed vehicles like the Grand Cherokee limits your choice in modifications.

o Weight – It is easier to get a light 4x4 unstuck than a heavy rig. Lighter weight also means less fuel consumption and smaller tires will do the job. Too light may get you into trouble in river crossing.

o Doors – Two doors are enough if you travel alone or with one co-driver. Else I would recommend you go with four or more doors to ensure safe access for all passengers.

o Price – Consider both the initial investment as well as the cost of running the 4x4. Cost of running is both the fuel it will use as well as the cost of spare parts, repairs and taxes.

  • Your Single Biggest Wish?
I am adding more and more content and value to 4x4OffRoads.com.

Please... if there's anything IMPORTANT that you wish I would do, anything that will make your life easier and/or bring you better knowledge...

Reply to this e-mail with your biggest wish for the site!

Another option for you is to take part in a simple survey I set up. It should only take a couple of minutes to fill out. Also you get to voice your preferences regarding further development of the 4x4OffRoads.com web site.

I review all wishes and use to build a list for the most wanted, which I then prioritize according to demand.

  • Tip - Mud Hole Passing
Mud holes is one of the most common off road obstacles. You don't really need a swamp to see mud. After many days of raining any road can get wet enough to form mud.
Begin by evaluating the situation. If you are confident you are able to cross (or you have good backup by other rigs) - be sure you are into 4x4 LOW and drive in and even speed as straight as you can through. Try and keep a steady momentum with light throttle.

  • Digital Photo Web
As you may have noticed there is a new logo visible on the 4x4OffRoads.com site. I discovered that I have gained experience in building web sites that are heavily supported by digital images. Also - being a visual kind of guy I enjoy taking pictures of various subjects. Therefore I started a new web site that I use as a hub or central station for all my web sites and also to share photos I gather through my other interests and travel. The web is of course named Digital-Photo-Web.com

You are welcome to take a look and even send in a picture of two of your favorite non 4 wheeling subject in the reader photos section.

Best wishes and keep on wheeling,
    Thrandur Arnthorsson
