  • A Note From The Editor
For the last weeks I have been doing some major changes to the look and feel of 4x4OffRaods.com. I have been working hard behind the scenes to make it better. I really hope that you like what you see. There should be major improvements in page loading so your browsing experience will be better.

I am really looking forward to more good things to be added to the web. Perhaps the biggest part will be a kind of MySpace for 4 wheelers - you are going to love it!  You will be able to not only share your pictures and stories but also add to the ever growing knowledge that is gradually building up in 4x4OffRoads.com. Can't tell you more now but this will be on in a few weeks.

Subscribers to the newsletter are now more than 6000 and the number of unique visitors for a single day hit a new all time high of 6009 at January 30th.

This year you are going to get more 4x4 articles and 4 wheeling experiences as well as more stories from the Formula Off Road series.

First snow trip of the year was great and you can read more about it in the article. Fantastic views and great wheeling. I still have to finish making the video from it - from all the footage I took. It will give you a whole different perspective of how it happens.

  • Readers Rigs Are On!
If you have a 4x4 you feel proud of and want to show others - please don't hesitate to submit pictures and descriptions.

Already there are a number of nice trucks up. My plan is to make these pages high-quality and accessible and I need your help in doing so. Almost all 4x4's are unique and I am sure yours is in some way. Share your experience and allow the rest of the 4 wheeling world to see your truck and how it is used...

Take some time in describing your 4x4 and how you enjoy it. Use as many words as needed. As more rigs are added I get more picky - choosing only interesting rigs with lots of information and an unusual story.

Here is the page for submitting your 4x4 and looking at other readers trucks.

    Engine Choice
Most 4 wheelers are stuck with the engine already in their trucks because swapping it out takes a lot of time and effort.

Somehow it seems you always want slightly more power. Fuel economy is naturally high on your list of improvements. Under similar load - fuel consumption is mostly related to the weight of your rig. A typical two ton petrol truck uses about 15 liters of fuel pr 100 km while a three ton truck uses about 22 liters of fuel for the same distance. A smaller engine may in some cases be less economical because it is working under more strain. A bigger engine may also use more fuel because you drive it in a more aggressive way.

    Petrol engines
Petrol engines have traditionally been lighter and give you more horsepower. The fuel efficiency is not too good. The petrol engine works under less pressure than diesel engine and are therefore less costly to maintain.
Petrol engines are best if you have to rely on yourself for fixing the engine someplace far from home. Select a petrol engine if you use it only for shorter tours, need short spurts of high output power and if you can afford to spend more on fuel.

    Diesel engines
Diesel is just a little bit more popular than petrol as fuel for the trucks. Diesel engines are more economical, have higher torque in lower RPMs and have been getting lighter in the last years. Older diesel engines where big and heavy and could run for hundreds of thousands of kilometer (or miles) without any maintenance. The newer lighter ones need more service and are not as durable. The biggest drawback to the newer diesel engines is the cost of maintenance and the need for expert mechanics.
A diesel engine is better for long and extended tours and when you are driving your rig through difficult areas for long stretches.

    More air
A combustion engine is basically an air pump. To increase the power you have to get more air through the system. The major methods to get more air are:
     - Turbo – is especially popular in diesel engines. It pumps more air into the engine and therefore allows more fuel to be used. An intercooler is often used in conjunction with the turbo to lower the heat of the incoming air and since cold air takes less volume than hot you can increase the air by up to 20% - an added benefit is that colder air makes the engine last longer.
     - Blower – works in a similar way as the turbo. It is an electronic air pump that automatically comes in after a certain number of RPM is reached. It is more popular in petrol engines.
     - Exhaust headers – are designed to eliminate the manifold's back pressure. Instead of a common manifold that all of the cylinders share, each cylinder gets its own exhaust pipe. The individual pipes are cut and bent so that each one is the same length as the others. By making them the same length, it guarantees there is no back pressure generated by the cylinders sharing the single collector. In petrol engines exhaust headers can give you a 10% increase in power.
     - More open exhaust pipes – are a relatively simple option to reduce resistance in the exhaust air flow - especially in addition to more open mufflers. Turbo enhanced engines make good use of the reduced resistance and will kick in at lower RPM.
     - Hot chips – may be your only option if you have made other changes to your engines air flow – like a turbo, exhaust headers or more open exhaust pipes. If not they are hardly worth the cost and may shorten your engine life as well as increase fuel consumption.

  • Your Single Biggest Wish?
I am adding more and more content and value to 4x4OffRoads.com.

Please... if there's anything IMPORTANT that you wish I would do, anything that will make your life easier and/or bring you better knowledge...

Reply to this e-mail with your biggest wish for the site!

Another option for you is to take part in a simple survey I set up. It should only take a couple of minutes to fill out. Also you get to voice your preferences regarding further development of the 4x4OffRoads.com web site.

I review all wishes and use to build a list for the most wanted, which I then prioritize according to demand.

  • Tip - Beadlocks
Recently use of beadlocks has been getting popular. A beadlock is a metal circle that is usually bolted to the outer side of the rim and securely fastens the side of the tire. Naturally a beadlock makes the tire a little bit heavier but you can be pretty sure the tire stays in its place and will not slip on the rim.

  • Digital Photo Web
As you may have noticed there is a new logo visible on the 4x4OffRoads.com site. I discovered that I have gained experience in building web sites that are heavily supported by digital images. Also - being a visual kind of guy I enjoy taking pictures of various subjects. Therefore I started a new web site that I use as a hub or central station for all my web sites and also to share photos I gather through my other interests and travel. The web is of course named Digital-Photo-Web.com

You are welcome to take a look and even send in a picture or two of your favorite subject in the reader photos section.

It can be on any theme you are interested in.

Best wishes and keep on wheeling,
