About Antarctica
by: Anonymous

The biggest challenge with Antarctica is the lack of gas stations every 200 kilometers (or miles or anything).

As far as I know - there have only been 4x4s driving the South Pole in addition to snowmobiles.

You might have to do a comprehensive study of your options. Planning a tour over there must be thorough and the tour will be EXPENSIVE!

Would they work well on Antarctica?
by: Anonymous

We want to transport passengers on Antarctica at higher speeds (currently 20 km/h with CAT Challengers) with a Toyota Land Cruiser. I know very little about 4x4. Would tyres work better?

Hi Ashlee
by: Dr.M

Well this car had been used in Oman, And i think its nice that they can change from the Matracks wheels into the normal within less than 30 min. I guess its nice way to have fun. In other way its very slow and spend a huge fuel. The most important its illagel in the street!

Thanks
Dr.M

How simple is that?
by: Skerik

I did a succesful search with the MATTRACKS spelling ... they'll forgive anything now days.
I can't imagine these baby's are as trouble free as tires ... Might cost a wee bit more as well. I imgine the greater area of contact might help in snow or mud ... My truck already can get enough flex to tip itself over. Sure looks cool though.

Litefoot/Mattracks

I used to have a few sets of tracks for my atv's

See here

I also had a 2004 Ranger with tracks, here's some pics of my highly customized Polaris Ranger 500

The Mattracks are DOT approved for use in the US and Canada, but that may not appy to other countries like Thrandur stated. If you were in snow all the time, they would be the hot ticket. BUT, if you follow the pictures from all the trips Thrandur and his friends do through Iceland, you'll notice alot of water crossings up onto ledges, holes/ice to break though. Certin instances tracks are a nitemare to work with. Example, climbing a 40cm diameter log is nothing for a low psi tire, but a track might just slam into the log, trying to dig unerneath it. To get over you would need to build up the approach for the track rolls over.

I am very temped to do tracks, it's $28,000USD for a set for my Jeep. There's three down sides besides the one's I've listed already.

1. If there isn't much now it's alot of $$$$ to have sitting around.

2. You're limited to 64 km/h max speed. Even 44" tires will manage better speed than that. Off in the snow they're awesome, but slow there too. I would average 15-20km/h on my gps with the atv's on tracks. If this is fast enough, they just may work then.

3. If a track comes off, or there's repairs to be made, or debris cuts up a track, they can be a horrible fix on the trail. Rocks can rip the track, break or bend the sprockets.

Straight snow, you would love them. I would try to get stuck, wet snow would push up and over top of the racks, you would back up and go again. That's where they shine, but they are a pain everwhere else.

Hope this helped!
