Interesting points...

Yeah - I agree - Iceland is so very different from the rest of Europe. With so much of the interior having scarcely any inhabitants and vast areas of sand, lava and the big icecaps to top it off - it fits perfectly to use a 4x4 to reach these amazing places.

I believe the more you travel around the wilderness you realize the beauty of it. If you force everybody to hike to these places you also hinder those who can't walk that easily - like handicapped people as well as the old.

As for the size of the 4x4s I am not fond of too much regulations. Let people choose their own according to their needs. Using big and trustworthy vehicles off road is often the safest route. Like you point out - a small Suzuki might get caught in the currents of a river.

If we face "conservationists" we have to be able to stand on our right. As long as we don't damage anything everybody should be happy. I think all the cars in the big cities are more of a problem. There you have parking space issues and traffic jams during rush hours. And in general too many people around - at least for someone like me.

I don't think we should only allow tour operators to go wheeling. That would take away the pioneering role of the individuals that have built up the knowledge through years of trying out new things.

EU seems to foster the idea that everything is banned unless explicitly allowed. I think a better strategy is to allow everything unless explicitly banned.

Lets work together on making things more open and accessible!
