Off road lovers don’t just meet at contests. They meet up for a weekend in the forest, a drive in the fields or a week in the mountains. We set up a little get together after new year to celebrate 2008 and enjoy a week away from civilization and in the comfort of the tracks.

The area was chosen as usually, Transylvania, in the Sighisoara area. We got to the mansion we were supposed to be staying in at the beginning of January. All the way from Bucharest we kept meeting cars at various points on the road that were designated to come with us. By the time we got to the destination we were 3 Romanian cars, 2 Greek cars and one Belgian car.

The cars were 2 Land Rover Defenders, 90 and 110, one Discovery V8i, two Toyota Land Cruisers, one Mercedes G Klasse and last but not least a Jeep Wrangler.

The first day we set in mind to remake the Canon Experience route, that was completely and utterly covered by snow so we would have to drive rather blindfolded and try to rediscover the route. There were a few problems, an occasional broken stop light and overfender… small casualties due to sliding, rocking and hitting the cars on trees, mud walls and so on.

The blow fell when, noticing something strange at our car and asking for professional help from the Belgian team we found out that our half – shaft cross needed to be changed. We managed to get one and Patrick together with Ivan changed it then and there (thank you Patrick). Challenges occurred quite often, cars getting blocked in a river bank, stuck in knee-high mud or strangled over a muddy hillside.

At some point we decided to go and find an abandoned village. Our adventures led us to getting a bit lost in the forest some time after nightfall but the projectors and head lamps did a lot to ease the winching and steering in the deep, half – frozen mud.

It was only three days later that we managed to get to the village, after some miles of problematic terrain with mud and 30 to 40 degrees side angle. The village compensated though through it’s beauty even if there was only one man living in the whole area. We bought cheese from him and went back to the mansion due to leave the following day for home.

I really enjoy seeing real 4WD vehicles in real situations where they are needed. There are so many highway bound posers that never go off the pavement here that seeing life or death 4 wheeling in Iceland is really refreshing.
