Like every year, the center of Romania, which spawned so many
legends and myths is also home to one
of the biggest competitions
on the continent. The 7 day trophy, notorious throughout the off
road world
for both it's beauty and it's high level of difficulty
welcomed mud lovers from all around to it's nine
edition. Almost
120 cars in 2 separate classes (Hobby and Extreme) lined up at the
starting point with
hopes of making the top three to finish the
competition.

The cars are, much like every year, better than last year's more
powerful and more complex - among
which an impressive Range Rover
on tractor tires with front and rear steering, the 3-time-in-a-row
winners for the Extreme class Hungarian team with space frame
vehicles resembling a G Wagon and a
Wrangler on Volvo portal
axles and many more. Worth mentioning, but for the Hobby Class this
time,
is a first ever participation of a constructor. The new
Dacia Duster, built in partnership with the French
company
Renault brought forward a team of Dusters which, although less
experienced than other die-
hard participants, performed
admirably and managed to finish in the first half.

Unlike other years, the tracks were slightly different, due to
excessive flooding and extremely high risk
roads. Even so, the
competitors managed to battle extreme slopes, deep mud areas and
dangerous rock
sections, spending up to 24 hours on the tracks.

Unlike other years, the competition saw two unexpected turn of
events, with one of the Romanian team
cars falling 200 meters
down a rather steep hill and sadly totaling one of the most
beautiful and well
prepared Disco V8's the competition has ever
seen. The second unexpected events saw the Hungarian
Wrangler
fall into a rock quarry but amazingly still getting back into the
race. Much like every year,
the large Cris river presented racers
with an special section for extreme class which, especially since it
partially took place at night time, was an impressive sight for
on-lookers and a particularly demanding
experience for the pilot
and co-pilot.

For the first time in the race's history and possibly for the first
time in any off road competition, the
TAT staff set up a series
of webcams in the special stages for the Extreme class which
streamed the
competition live throughout it's 6 days, connecting
people from all around the world to the unique
sights and
adventures that the trophy has to offer.

The first three places for this year's Extreme class section were, as follows
Team 03A and 03B from Hungary
Csaba Boros +
Eigner Mihaly - Jeep Wrangler
Magyar Szilard + Kovacs Krisztian -
Mercedes G
Team 02A and 02B from Belgium
Dominique
Schoonenburg + Bertrand Lebrun - LR Defender 90
Antoine Reul +
Benoit Reul - LR Defender 90
Team 22A and 22B from Romania
Gabi Nicolae +
Valentin Capota - Nissan Prototype
Dan Kiraly +Barny Kiraly - LR
Tomcat

It was a difficult week and all contestants merit great praise for
having the courage to participate in the
Transilvania Adventure
Trophy, 2010. The price the cars paid is, like always, reflective of
great stories
that took place during the one week in one of the
wildest places on the Old Continent.

I really enjoy seeing real 4WD
vehicles in real situations where they are needed. There
are so many highway bound posers that never go off the
pavement here that seeing life or death 4 wheeling in
Iceland is really refreshing.
