Gaesavotn hut (Gæsavatnaskáli)

After a good nights rest in the Gaesavatnaskali hut we get prepared for the coming day.

Sport Trac Air Bags

I find the suspension on the Sport Trac a bit strange and find that the front air-bags are not sitting in their proper place. This must have happened in yesterdays fall into the pit. Oli is a genius mechanic and has the bags back in order in short while. It seems that the aluminum in the bottom parts of the air-bags are literally rotting away and the bolts have long since been broken. Time to rethink this part of the design.

Emergency hut at Kistufell

After we get moving we come to this small emergency hut at Kistufell. The outside bench proves an excellent place for a "picnic".

The huge crater

On our way we come across this huge crater. It is about 170 meters (570 feet) deep and 500 meters (1700 feet) wide.

Dyngjujokull glacier

We are driving close to the Dyngjujokull glacier. A few years ago it ran forward and is still a bit rough on the edges.

The scenery is beautiful with the glacier and partly cloudy sky in the back with small rivers and creeks coming from the spring melting.

The weather at Kverkfjoll hut is bad

Early afternoon that day we reach Kverkfjoll hut. The weather at the hut is bad - very windy and it looks like we are best served by taking it easy there for a while.

We meet another group of three trucks and share the hut for the night.
