(Florida and Spain)
OK, I have several Jeeps, one for on road driving and two in Florida for off road duty. First vehicle is a 79 CJ7, 258 six cylinder, 3 inch lift, 3.73 gears in a Dana 30 and a Dana 44. I run Super Swamper Boggers in the 10.50X35x15 flavour on 10 inch rims. Gets me through most trail mud holes, but I could use more gears for more severe applications. I have run regular TSL Swampers, but the Boggers are just that much more aggressive. Highly recommended for real mud action. My other Jeep is a 73 Commando, 258 six cylinder again, spring over axle setup, with transplant axles from a 58ish Willys wagon. I have no idea what gear ratio this sports , maybe 4.88´s or 5.38´s...I also have welded up the spider gears on the rear end. Running 17X40 Ground Hawgs on this rig right now...this beast will go through some serious mud and water. However, the Hawgs are to be replaced by, you got it, Super swamper TSL´s in a 15X39 size on 12 inch rims. These are definitely Florida rigs built for the mud and the Swamper TSL´s and Boggers are the way to go.
I have another Jeep, a 1987 YJ that I have over in Spain for use as a daily driver and a weekend warrior. This one has a transplanted 4.0 (Cherokee donor vehicle) married up to the original Peugeot transmission with the NP 231 transfer case, Dana 30 and Dana 35 with 3.07 gears (Horrible gears I know). I am currently running Marshall MT´s in the 10.50X31X15 size on a 10 inch rim. I find this size to be pretty good for light duty trail running on mountain trails on the Mediterranean foothills of Eastern Spain (Communidad Valencia y Alicante Province). I have about destroyed the MT´s on all the sharp gravel and rock to be found here and am planning on replacing them with BF Goodrich AT´s in the same 10.50X31 size in the near future. I reckon the AT will be about all I need for trail duty here as we don´t get that much rain or mud here.
Oh yes, I also have a 89 Cherokee and a 95 F150 in Florida that I currently run Dunlop AT´s on for real light duty work. Nice tyres also.
So my point here is, for severe mud terrain, get Swampers in either the TSL or Bogger variety. And AT´s for trail applications. Hope this helps someone.
I really enjoy seeing real 4WD
vehicles in real situations where they are needed. There
are so many highway bound posers that never go off the
pavement here that seeing life or death 4 wheeling in
Iceland is really refreshing.
