The sixth and final Icelandic Formula Off Road championship is held at Stapafell. Stapafell is a small mountain on the Reykjanes peninsula just west of Keflavik airport.
The sun is shining but the wind is stiff and it feels cold. The tracks are varied and don't look hard but not impossible.
Haukur Thorvaldsson has already secured his national championship title in the Street Legal class even without taking part. So he decides to compete in the Unlimited Class just for today.

Ingolfur Gudvardarson is driving Puddle Trowsers...

...and finishing off with style.

Steingrimur Bjarnason riding the willys - and riding hard.

Steingrimur wins the Street Legal class today with confident driving.

Ivar Gudmundsson showing some agressive driving on the Devil.

Ivar ends up in fourth place.

Magnus Sigurdsson on his amazing Suzuki Jimny with a Saab turbo engine and light weight gets the third place.

Pall Palsson driving his sweet Willys to second place.
The standings in the Unlimited Class is more even. Jon Orn has a good lead though.

Bjorn Bragi Saevarsson is driving the "Heimasaeta" one of the first Formula Off Road truck and copied by most others since.

Sweet 4x4 truck!

Olafur Bragi Jonsson driving his Mountain Fox through one of the endgates.

Olafur secures the second place.

Two drivers share the "Hlunkurinn" truck. Benedikt H. Sigfusson and Sigfus G. Benediktsson.

4x4 Off Roads!

Benedikt ends up in 6th place.

And Sigfus in 8th.

Hafsteinn Thorvaldsson shared his Turf truck with his brother Haukur.

Hafsteinn ends up in fourth place...

...and his brother Haukur gets the third place.

Johann Runarsson driving the Clown.

With the only rollover of the day the competition is over a little too soon for Johann since the rollcage is damaged.

Jon Orn Ingileifsson driving (flying?) the Coireboy.

This is a really impressive setup for a 4x4 formula truck.

In the timed track, Jon breaks the wheel off but still manages to finish on three wheels and secure the win and the national championship.

Leo Vidar Bjornsson driving the Iron Maiden. Some great driving and Leo Vidar gets the 5th place.

Kristjan R. Saemundsson is also driving on the Iron Maiden.

The Land-Rover or "Animal" also has two drivers.

Johann Dadi Palmason in 9th place...

...and Sigurdur Reynisson.

Vignir R. Vignisson driving N1 Willys.

Vignir ends up in 10th place.

I really enjoy seeing real 4WD
vehicles in real situations where they are needed. There
are so many highway bound posers that never go off the
pavement here that seeing life or death 4 wheeling in
Iceland is really refreshing.
