Wheel Diameter

by rknash

First let me say thanks! This is a great site and great forum!

I read Thrandur's articles about choosing Off Road Tires and Wheels. Lot's of great information. He recommended sticking with 15" wheels, but didn't give much follow-up about why. I was wonder if anyone could comment on the pros and cons of the larger diameters?

I live near Seattle, WA, where we deal with lots of rocks, stumps, mud, and ruts. Traction and height are both paramount. I'm thinking about how much ride height is sacrificed by airing down a 36" tire on 15" rims, and wondering if a better balance couldn't be had by moving up to 17", 18", or even 20" rims? Seems like the larger rims would give you back some of your height, but less rubber might mean less sidewall flex, smaller footprint, and less traction. Maybe the increased rotational inertia of larger rims takes a toll on the drive train too? I'm hoping someone has played around with different combinations and can offer some insight.

Thanks!!

I really enjoy seeing real 4WD vehicles in real situations where they are needed. There are so many highway bound posers that never go off the pavement here that seeing life or death 4 wheeling in Iceland is really refreshing.
